Tip 101: Enable/disable the Shutdown Event Tracker

To control the use of the Shutdown Event Tracker, change the following registry information:

Hive: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
Key: SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Reliability
Name: ShutdownReasonUI
Type: REG_DWORD
Value: 1 = enable
Value: 0 = disable
You don’t need to reboot for this change to take effect.

Alternatively you might want to configure the Shutdown Event Tracker for multiple machines through the use of Group Policy.

  1. Open Group Policy, then load the group policy you want to apply the change to.
  2. Expand Computer Configuration, Administrative Templates, System.
  3. Double-click Display Shutdown Event Tracker.
  4. Select Enabled.
  5. Select the Never or Always option, then click OK.
  6. Click OK to close all dialog boxes.
